The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is proud to announce that Clinical Assistant Professor Madison Irwin has been awarded the Giacomazza Pediatric Palliative Care Award for Outstanding Education and Mentoring.

The award is presented by the University of Michigan Health’s annual Pediatric Palliative Care Awards – and highlights a pediatric clinician who exemplifies best practices in education on the principles of pediatric palliative care.

Her award nominator remarked, “I speak for many of our pediatric providers when I say that we have learned a great deal from Madison – not just from formal lectures or mentorship, but from talking through countless cases and clinical questions and applying that guidance to the care of our patients. All that knowledge gained is paid forward when we’re called upon to try to help the next child in pain.”

“It is an honor to receive this award, and even more rewarding to work alongside so many colleagues dedicated to providing exemplary care to our patients at University of Michigan Health each day,” said Irwin. “Thank you to my colleagues who nominated me.”

Dr. Irwin serves as the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist for Michigan Medicine’s Adult Palliative Care Program and also supports the Pediatric Palliative Care team. Her research focuses on improving the care of vulnerable populations, including older adults and palliative care populations, by advancing clinical pharmacy practice within interdisciplinary teams.

Within the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Irwin teaches topics including pain management, palliative care, substance use disorders, and pharmacy practice.

Recently, Dr. Irwin discussed with Drug Topics the importance of valuing the role of pharmacists in healthcare, opportunities for pharmacists to expand their role and how high rates of chronic pain may change the landscape of pharmacy practice in the coming years.

Dr. Irwin will accept her award at a reception on Monday, November 25.

We hail congratulations to Dr. Irwin on this well-deserved honor.
