A variety of sub-specializations leads to a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Studies in pharmaceutics, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, and chemical engineering further our understanding of:

  • Characterization of membrane transporters and how they relate to drug design, delivery, and targeting;
  • Chemical and physical integrity of drugs and dosage forms;
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs;
  • Mechanisms of how drugs cross membranes and barriers;
  • Targeted and controlled release of drugs;
  • Targeted gene delivery;
  • Quantitative relationships between chemical (e.g., stability) and physical (e.g., solubility) behaviors of drugs and their chemical structures; and
  • Methods of monitoring drugs and controlling levels of drugs in the body, including the development of biosensors.

Research in these areas typically begins with phenomenological inquiry and extends to quantitative, mechanistic and molecular investigations. Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty teach courses in drug delivery (including cellular and molecular approaches), pharmaceutical engineering, chemical and transport kinetics and mechanisms, physical chemistry of dispersed system , behavior of solids, computational chemistry, topical issues in biotechnology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. Extradepartmental courses are drawn from the areas of biological chemistry,cell and molecular biology, pharmacology, genetics, statistics, mathematics, and many others. Complementing course offerings are a wide range of faculty research interests, which provide a rich and diverse environment for individualized student development.

Faculty working in the area of PharmSci research include:
