Infectious Diseases Clinical Practice and Translational Research Pharmacy Fellowship
This is a two-year infectious diseases pharmacy fellowship focused on providing the trainee with clinical training in infectious diseases practice while developing research skills in many areas, including proposal development, grant submission, data analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of findings (i.e., conference abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts). The fellow will further develop skills with respect to antibiotic usage and resistance monitoring, formulary management, and clinical pathway implementation and assessment that are essential to any practicing infectious diseases pharmacist.
Graduates of this program will have similar clinical training as PGY2 ID residents, but gain more experience with leading projects, managing and analyzing large datasets, and facilitating longitudinal quality improvement initiatives. We expect graduates to be highly competitive for any clinical position, and also be well-positioned to compete for faculty or industry positions.
Format
The fellow will have their time evenly split between clinical practice and research. During months where the fellow is on clinical service, they will be based at Michigan Medicine. For periods where the fellow is off service, focused on clinical research, they will be based at the College of Pharmacy. These two locations are a 10-15 minute walk from one another across campus.
Clinical Rotations
While there will be some flexibility in the clinical rotations offered to the fellow, core rotations will focus on infectious diseases clinical practice and will include Microbiology, Infectious Diseases Consult Service, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Outpatient Stewardship, and Transplant Infectious Diseases. Longitudinal experiences will include helping implement and evaluate quality improvement initiatives, monitoring antimicrobial resistance, improving publicly reported metrics and meeting hospital accreditation standards. During the second year of the fellowship, the trainee will repeat some of these learning experiences, while serving as the primary preceptor for APPE pharmacy students and PGY-1 and/or PGY-2 residents.
Teaching
The fellow will be provided teaching opportunities within the Infectious Diseases Therapeutics Lab during the P3 academic year. The fellow will also help facilitate additional courses within the pharmacy curriculum. All efforts will be made to provide additional teaching opportunities, as desired, in accordance with the professional goals of the trainee.
Program Directors
The fellowship program will be co-directed by Drs. Jason Pogue and Jerod Nagel. Although both program directors will be involved in all aspects of the fellowship training, Dr. Nagel will oversee the clinical activities of the fellow while at Michigan Medicine, whereas Dr. Pogue will serve as point person for clinical research at the college.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria
- PharmD from an ACPE Accredited Institution
- PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or equivalent experience
- License to Practice Pharmacy in the State of Michigan or be Licensed by July 1, 2024
