The science of oral drug product dissolution has developed and advanced over the past 40 years, as has the field of gastroenterology, and this has led to the development of the nascent field of biopredictive dissolution methodology. This new field, resulting from fundamental scientific developments in the fields of drug and drug product, in vivo dissolution and gastroenterology, has many implications for optimizing and insuring oral drug product in vivo performance. The implications for optimizing oral drug product performance in vivo and insuring in vivo oral drug product equivalent performance; i.e., bioequivalence (BE), certainly stand out as major potential applications of a biopredictive science and methodology.
While there are substantial public policy issues involved in the potential uses of this developing science, from drug discovery to regulatory, and including, most significantly, clinical medicine, this workshop will focus on the science of biopredictive dissolution science and methodology. It is through the development of sound fundamental science in this oral biopredictive field that the implications will have a sound scientific basis upon which to further develop. It is the goal of this workshop and related faculty retreat that a ‘white paper’ be developed that will set the tone and direction of this field over the next 10-20 years.
