PharmD Students Sharpen Clinical Skills During Annual Competition
The Health System Student Pharmacists at the College of Pharmacy hosted the annual American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Clinical Skills Competition, where teams of 2 students (P3 and/or P4) participated in two rounds of a team-based analysis of a clinical patient case. The Clinical Skills Competition provides students with the opportunity to use their skills acquired throughout the curriculum, such as assessing a patient case, preparing a problem list, prioritizing problems, creating a care plan, and more. The competition is also a good environment for the students to practice case presentations in front of other individuals on a health care team (physicians, nurses, etc.). This year there were 18 participants, approximately 40% of participants were P3 students.
During the first round of the competition, teams were presented with the patient case and given 2 hours to prepare the patient care plan for submission to the judges. Teams utilized their evidence-based medicine research skills when searching for more information via the allowed computer or book resources. There is one week between the first round and second round to allow judges time to peruse the submitted materials from the teams and decide on the top 5 teams to advance to the second round. During the second round, each top 5 team (listed below) is given 15 minutes to prepare their presentation. Teams will then have 2 minutes to present the case in front of judges and 8 minutes for Q&A.
The winning team of this year’s U-M Clinical Skills Competition will represent the University of Michigan in both the state-wide competition hosted by Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the national competition hosted by ASHP at the Midyear Clinical meeting in New Orleans, LA. The winning team was Kayla Popova and Allison Schepers! Overall, the local competition is an interactive and fun way to challenge all participants to pull together all of their patient case analysis skills from the curriculum.
