Students Host Peace Neighborhood Center Workshop
Five first-year Pharmacy students recently presented a healthy eating workshop at the Peace Neighborhood Center.
Peace Neighborhood Center, a community partner site for the Pharmacy 503 Service Learning for Health Professionals course, offers educational, health, and fiscal independence programs for children and families. In addition to tutoring each week, the College of Pharmacy students placed at Peace Neighborhood planned and implemented a budget-friendly healthy eating workshop for parents. Students selected healthy recipes, determined the price per serving size, and made samples for all of the workshop attendees. Students covered a wide range of topics related to healthy eating, including MyPlate, the importance of breakfast, and healthy snacking.
Pharmacy 503 Service Learning for Health Professionals course is required for all first-year Pharmacy students and offers them the opportunity to collaborate with students from other schools of the health professions, including the Schools of Public Health, Social Work, and Kinesiology. As part of this course, every student is placed at one of fourteen community sites to complete twenty hours of service.
This semester, students will be presenting a similar workshop on food-ingredient awareness that will also include cooking and sampling. The workshop will take place on April 16.
While students plan and implement the entire workshop, those interested in supporting Peace Neighborhood can do so in a variety of ways listed on their website.
