Joseph Davis, PharmD’03, was named the 2016 Preceptor of the Year Award winner at the 13th Annual Preceptor Symposium, May 5, 2016.

Dr. Davis began his pharmacy career at Farmer Jack Pharmacy. He is currently a pharmacy manager at CVS Pharmacy within Target in Brighton, MI. Dr. Davis has served as a U-M College of Pharmacy preceptor for eight years; his Community Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotation is a favorite among the P4 students.

Dr. Davis received many student nominations for the Preceptor of the Year Award in past years. One of this year’s submissions commented that, “Dr. Davis went above and beyond to serve his patients and inspired me to want to do the same…through example, he taught me a great deal about patient communication and served as a perfect model of how every pharmacist should interact with their patients.”

While accepting the award, Dr. Davis expressed his gratitude and acknowledged his former preceptors in attendance. As a U-M Pharmacy alumnus, Dr. Davis was humbled to be recognized by his former instructors.  He described precepting U-M students as a pleasure and remarked that, “teaching pharmacy students and training new pharmacists are two of the most professionally fulfilling aspects of my career.”

As Dr. Davis reflected back on his inspiration for precepting student, he referred to a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, “people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.” It is this level of caring that has made Dr. Davis a valued and inspiring preceptor and this year’s Preceptor of the Year awardee.
