The Upward Bound program brings high school students who are on track to be the first in their family to attend college into UMHS to shadow various departments.

Deborah Wagner, PharmD, clinical associate professor of pharmacy, participated in the Upward Bound program this summer. The program brings high school students who are on track to be the first in their family to attend college into the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) to shadow various departments.

High school senior Makari Whittaker, 17, worked with Dr. Wagner in pediatric anesthesiology. He said he was blown away by the experience. “Dr. Wagner was the most inspirational person I’ve ever come across,” Makari said. “She never gave up on any of those patients or any of those families. One day, I want that to be me.”
