"I gratefully acknowledge the College of Pharmacy for its enduring support, the staff and students of the VMCC for all their hard work, and of course the many outstanding scientists I have collaborated with at U-M without whose generosity and expertise this award would not have been possible,” states Dr. Larsen.

Dr. Scott Larsen, Research Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Director of the Vahlteich Medicinal Chemistry Core facility at the College of Pharmacy, has been selected as the 2014 Collegiate Research Professorship Award recipient.

The Office of Research at the University of Michigan has established this award to recognize members of the Research Faculty for significant scholarly contributions to their field of study. Specifically, this honor recognizes extraordinary contributions in research, education, and service, along with a strong international reputation and connections beyond the university. The high degree of enthusiasm shown by the recommenders is also a deciding factor.

Dr. Larsen spent over 22 years in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically at The UpJohn Co., Pharmacia, and Pfizer, as a synthetic medicinal chemist, rising to the rank of Associate Director and Fellow. Dr. Larsen joined the U-M College of Pharmacy in 2007.

Dr. Larsen received Pharmacia & Upjohn Special Recognition Awards in 1998 and 2000, was a charter member of the Pharmacia Fellows in 2001, and received a Pfizer Achievement Award in 2007. He is a member of the Medicinal Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society and has served on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Special Emphasis Panels for NIDA and NCATS.

“The past seven years have been an amazing experience. I’ve had the privilege of working on many more collaborations than I ever did in industry, and on a much greater diversity of therapeutic targets. What has been particularly gratifying is to see how my industry experience in medicinal chemistry has complemented the world-class biology of U-M researchers to advance important projects. I gratefully acknowledge the College of Pharmacy for its enduring support, the staff and students of the VMCC for all their hard work, and of course the many outstanding scientists I have collaborated with at U-M without whose generosity and expertise this award would not have been possible,” states Dr. Larsen.

Dr. Larsen will be presented the award at a private awards ceremony in October.

Congratulations to Dr. Larsen on this outstanding and well-deserved accomplishment!
