Chingju Wang Sheu, PhD’66, has been an employee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for more than 30 years. She started as a laboratory scientist in the Agency’s genetic toxicology branch, developing and validating methods for detecting genotoxicity of chemicals. In addition to her laboratory work, she served as a project officer for testing generally recognized as safe substances and food additives for potential genotoxicity through an FDA-Department of Energy interagency agreement with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She also managed contracts with FDA testing laboratories.

Since 1995, Sheu has been affiliated with the regulatory side of the FDA. She has worked on premarket approval of such industrial submissions as food additive petitions and food contact notifications. Sheu is currently a supervisor for regulatory toxicologists in the Division of Food Contact Notifications, Office of Food Additive Safety, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. In this capacity, she directs work assignments, addresses issues of potential toxicological import, and assures compliance to Agency policy in the area of food contact substances.

The author of many scientific publications and professional presentations, Sheu also has received numerous awards from the FDA, including the Agency’s 2006 Scientific Achievement Award for Excellence in Review Science and the 2007 Legacy Award. In 2004, she established the Chingju Wang Sheu Graduate Student Fellowship to help support graduate students at the College. *compliance to Agency policy in the area of food contact substances.
