Top Stories   Dr. Jim Dalton Assumes Deanship at the College of Pharmacy   Dr. Jim Dalton began his term as Dean of the U-M College of Pharmacy on September 1, 2014, succeeding Dean Frank Ascione.   College’s SNPhA Chapter Receives the SNPhA/Rite Aid Chapter Excellence Award   The College’s SNPhA Chapter has recently received the SNPhA/Rite Aid Chapter Excellence Award in the small chapter category.

Student Research Efforts Support Clinical Practices in Africa Dr. Vicki Ellingrod, along with three P2 students, Charlotte Buckley, Craig Michael, and Emily Van Wieren recently returned from Meru, Kenya, where they spent 4 weeks understanding the practice of pharmacy in Kenya, as well as how their educational programs are structured for pharmacy education. Dr. Wei Cheng Lab Develops Tools Using Optical Tweezers to Identify the Individuality of HIV Dr. Wei Cheng, the Ara G. Paul Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is the principal investigator in a University of Michigan study thought to be the first in which researchers were able to capture HIV at the single-particle level and measure with molecular resolutions.

Student News Phi Delta Chi Pharmacy Fraternity to Host Founders’ Day The Phi Delta Chi Pharmacy Fraternity will be hosting a Founders' Day event on November 2, 2014. This event is open to all alumni brothers of Phi Delta Chi to cheer on the Maize and Blue and reminisce about the early beginnings and current happenings of the fraternity. Graduate Students Form New Student Organization The College of Pharmacy Graduate Student Organization (COPGSO) was formed in March 2014 not only to represent graduate students at the College, but also to provide a forum for fostering interdepartmental scientific discussions within the College. Experience the Rho Chi Shadow Program The Rho Chi Shadow Program was established in 2013 by the Rho Chi Honor Society to promote career exploration and foster professional networking by offering P1, P2, and P3 students a one day shadow experience in their area of interest. Thanks to our dedicated alumni and preceptors, students may explore numerous pharmacy practice settings ranging from community pharmacy to clinical pharmacy to nontraditional pharmacy.

Faculty News Dr. Scott Larsen Receives 2014 Collegiate Research Professorship Award Dr. Scott Larsen, Research Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Director of the Vahlteich Medicinal Chemistry Core facility at the College of Pharmacy, has been selected as the 2014 Collegiate Research Professorship Award recipient. Dr. Hae Mi Choe Receives APhA Foundation 2014 Pinnacle Award Dr. Hae Mi Choe has been selected to receive the APhA Foundation’s 2014 Pinnacle Award in the Individual Career Achievement (Category I). Dr. Rick Bagozzi Hailed Among “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014” Dr. Rick Bagozzi, Professor of Social and Administrative Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, was listed as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds of 2014, according to Thomson Reuters. Dr. Kathleen Stringer Receives 2014 MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award Dr. Kathleen Stringer, PharmD’85, professor of clinical, social, and administrative sciences at the College of Pharmacy, has been awarded the 2014 MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award.

Alumni News Rachael Ng: Co-President of Professional Organization Rachael Ng, PharmD’10, currently serves as co-president of MotivAsians, a professional organization in Ohio that brings the region's widespread Asian-American population together to cultivate an even more vibrant community. Alumni Open New Endowments Rich and Jody Grossman and Sandy Goel open new endowments to support students within the College of Pharmacy. Alumni & Friends Hit the Course at the 13th Annual Golf Scramble On Tuesday June 10th, the Alumni Board of Governors hosted its 13th annual Alumni & Friends Golf Scramble. Unlike previous years, this year’s event was located at a new venue - The Polo Fields Washtenaw Golf Course. Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends enjoyed an outdoor grilled lunch buffet, putting contest, served dinner following play, as well as a gorgeous day on the course.

Research News Dissolution Conference Sets Tone and Direction for the Development of In Vivo Predictive Dissolution Methodologies In August, the College hosted its first annual In Vivo Predictive Dissolution Conference, bringing together experts from around the globe with representatives from academia, industry, and government in the fields of clinical science, engineering and basic science. This wide-ranging group of thought leaders presented on the state of current research in biopredictive dissolution science and methodology. Sherman Lab Collaboration Takes Major Stride Forward in Understanding Microorganism Biosynthesis In the June 26, 2014 issue of Nature, Dr. David Sherman, and collaborators have taken a major stride forward in understanding how the biochemical ‘machinery’ in microbes containing the step-by-step blueprints for natural product synthesis is operating. Using Artificial Intelligence to Impact Medication Adherence Dr. Karen Farris, Charles R. Walgreen III Professor of Pharmacy Administration, received funding in April 2014 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for an innovative text messaging research project.

The College Welcomes Clinical Pharmacists from Beijing University Hospitals The College of Pharmacy welcomes Lingyue Ma, Junyu Xu, Xia Zhao, and Nan Zhao, clinical pharmacists from Beijing University First Hospital. They will be visiting Ann Arbor in June and July.
