[Ann Arbor, Michigan] — The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is proud to announce that Dr. Hanna Phan, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Experiential Education, has been selected to receive the 2025 Richard A. Helms Award of Excellence in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice.
This distinction, awarded by the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA), recognizes pharmacists who show exemplary pediatric patient care, sustained and meritorious contributions to PPA, pediatric pharmacy practice, research, education, precepting and mentorship.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” stated Dr. Phan. “It has been a privilege to be part of each child’s care, learning from their life experience, as this has shaped me as a clinician and researcher. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion for pediatric pharmacy practice and research with various students and residents, from Arizona to Michigan, and be part of their professional journeys. The pediatric pharmacy community is truly unique and inspirational and I am very honored to be part of it. The true reward for me has been to see the success of mentees who then become esteemed, achieved colleagues who positively impact the care of their patients, each and everyday.”
Dr. Phan established an innovative pediatric pulmonology pharmacy practice in 2008 and founded one of the first postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pediatric pharmacy residencies in the Southwest/West during her tenure at the University of Arizona. She returned to UM in 2020 to develop clinical services and research in pediatric cystic fibrosis (CF) at Michigan Medicine. Since Fall 2024, in addition to ongoing research in pediatric CF, Dr. Phan oversees and coordinates the College of Pharmacy’s PharmD Experiential Education program – creating meaningful rotation experiences for students at every step of their education.
Dr. Nour Kadouh, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy, collaborated with various former students, residents and colleagues to put together Dr. Phan’s nomination for the award – stating that she is most deserving of this recognition.
“Dr. Phan’s unwavering commitment to advancing pediatric pharmacy practice, combined with her compassionate care for each patient, made her not only deserving of the Richard Helms Award but an invaluable asset to the profession,” Kadouh stated. “Her dedication to mentorship, advancing innovation and enhancing patient care in pediatric pharmacy practice reflects the core principles the award aims to honor.”
Dr. Phan will accept the award and give a lecture during PPA’s annual meeting on April 11 in Portland, OR.
