College Hosts Pharmacy Scholars Program Remotely
May 29, 2020
The May 19 kick-off of the College’s third annual Pharmacy Scholars summer program was a little different from previous years. All thirteen participants gathered on a Zoom call to introduce themselves instead of meeting in the Dean’s conference room.
Participants usually live on campus during the six-week program. This year, students from around the country will stay at home and attend sessions remotely. Program participants will still focus on Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) prep, mastering the interview process, and will be introduced to faculty and administrators in the College.
The Pharmacy Scholars Program also exposes participants to the variety of career options one has with a PharmD degree. PSP is open to college juniors, seniors, recent graduates, and individuals who are making a career transition and looking to attend pharmacy school.
“Pharmacy Scholars is an important program to the College of Pharmacy, both for outreach and recruitment,” explains Regina McClinton, PhD, the College’s chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. “When we realized we would not be able to bring students to campus, we were able to quickly pivot and convert the program to online. I don’t think this would have worked had it not been for the global conversion of work and school to being virtual – this allowed us to easily socialize PSP to being online, and for participants to adapt to the new format. All of this has allowed us to be one of the few summer programs at the University, and the only one in the College of Pharmacy that has been able to continue both its programming and mission.”
