Dr. Mustapha Beleh

Mustapha Beleh, PhD, Director of Education and Collegiate Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry, has been named the 32nd Golden Apple Award recipient. The award recognizes outstanding teaching and is the University’s only teaching award bestowed by students. 

Recipients are invited to give the lecture they would want to give if it were the last one of their careers. On October 7 at 7:30 PM, Dr. Beleh will present “It’s Never Too Late.”

Dr. Beleh was nominated by an overwhelming number of his students for his work as a professor at the U-M College of Pharmacy. On the nomination form for the award, students are asked to explain why they are nominating a particular teacher.

One nominator says that “Dr. Beleh is always striving to find ways so that his students can effectively learn important material, often in entertaining, funny, and relatable ways! He explains concepts very clearly, is very open with his expectations, and provides so many resources to contribute to our success that it's near impossible to utilize all of them! Truly an amazing individual, and we are so lucky to have him at the College of Pharmacy.”

Another nominator notes that “Dr. Beleh is one of the few professors who will do whatever it takes to make students feel comfortable and confident with class material. He also cares so much about our wellbeing and gets to know each of us on a personal level.”

Dr. Beleh earned his Bachelor’s in Science Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Alexandria University, Egypt in 1985.  He worked as a hospital and community pharmacist for two years, before pursuing graduate studies in Medicinal Chemistry and earned his PhD degree from the College of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University in 1992.  He then joined the faculty at the College of Pharmacy, South Dakota State University as an assistant professor.  In 1995, Dr. Beleh returned to his homeland Egypt, where he worked as the Director of Research at Pharco Pharmaceuticals.  He came back to the United States and joined the Medicinal Chemistry department at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in 1999.

Dr. Beleh’s research interest is to assess different issues related to pharmaceutical education and currently focuses on evaluating teaching tools and innovative teaching methods in Medicinal Chemistry courses, exploring the use of remedial education, evaluating curricular changes in the PharmD program and uncovering factors that predict student success.

Dr. Beleh is consistently recognized for his commitment to students and instruction. He was named a 2021 Collegiate Lecturer, won the College’s Students’ Appreciation Award in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. Additionally, he won the 2014 Special Recognition for Outstanding Teaching and the 2019 Teaching Excellence Award.
