The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is proud to recognize four dedicated preceptors with the first annual Experiential Education Excellence Faculty Award, Maize Preceptor of the Year Award, Blue Preceptor of the Year Award and Community Health and Engagement Preceptor Award.
Preceptors play an integral role in mentoring PharmD students throughout their rotations – providing real-life, hands-on experiences in health systems across the country.
Experiential Education Excellence Faculty Award
Shawna Kraft, PharmD ‘06, Clinical Associate Professor, has been awarded the Experiential Education Excellence Faculty Award. This award recognizes a dedicated U-M College of Pharmacy faculty member who has served as a primary preceptor for at least three years and has consistently hosted students for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).
In addition to her faculty role, Dr. Kraft serves as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, working in the areas of genitourinary cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. Her teaching philosophy centers on fostering critical thinking, innovation and personalized support in both classroom and clinical settings. She tailors her rotations to the goals of each student and works to build their confidence in patient care.
Maize Preceptor of the Year Award
Benjamin Harvey, PharmD, has been awarded the Maize Preceptor of the Year Award. This award honors adjunct clinical faculty who have precepted U-M PharmD students for at least one but fewer than five years, with consistent student engagement.
Since 2022, Dr. Harvey has served as a Clinical Pharmacist on the Cardiology/Surgery team at Michigan Medicine. His precepting philosophy emphasizes explaining the “why” behind drug therapy decisions by guiding students through real patient cases. He has received positive feedback from students – noting that they appreciate his case-based approach to learning.
Blue Preceptor of the Year Award
Nicole Rockey, PharmD ‘07, has been awarded the Blue Preceptor of the Year Award. This award recognizes adjunct clinical faculty who have served as primary preceptors for U-M PharmD students for five or more years, with consistent student engagement.
After gaining experience in both ambulatory care practice and academia, Dr. Rockey returned to her alma mater, the University of Michigan, in 2015 – serving as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist at U-M’s Ypsilanti Health Center. There, she helps patients manage diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, she provides ambulatory care pharmacy services to Packard Health Ypsilanti and works on a number of projects within the Michigan Institute for Care Management Transformation.
Dr. Rockey’s precepting philosophy goes beyond the basics of chart review and treatment knowledge – giving students a better understanding of collaboration, the logistics of a health system and barriers to patient care.
Community Health and Engagement Preceptor Award
Anne Yoo, PharmD ‘10, has been awarded the Community Health and Engagement Preceptor Award. This award honors preceptors who have served for at least two years and demonstrated a strong commitment to community health through active participation in outreach events and consistent support of students.
Dr. Yoo serves in a number of roles through Michigan Medicine, including Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, supporting transitions of care, quality and U-M’s Domino’s Farms Family Medicine Clinic. She has partaken and precepted numerous hours at community health events through the College of Pharmacy – often arriving early and staying late to ensure the success of each event to support student organizations and patient care. Her precepting philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving and mindfulness – empowering students to continue giving back to their communities as they progress through their careers.
These awardees were recognized at the Preceptor Education and Recognition Symposium on May 9, 2025. The College of Pharmacy congratulates each of these individuals, and thanks them for their service to pharmacy education!
