P1 Students Host a Blood Pressure Screening for Senior Community Members
February 4, 2020
On Friday, January 31st, the College of Pharmacy hosted its first ever blood pressure screening at Lurie Terrace, a senior-living facility in Ann Arbor. P1 class representatives at the College of Pharmacy were looking to increase their opportunities for lifelong learning. That’s when they collaborated with the Office of Community Engagement to create this event.
Students spent the day checking blood pressure and blood sugar levels for the residents and explained the results to them. P1’s learn these skills in therapeutics classes but typically don’t get a chance to exercise them until their second year. Events like these also give students a chance to improve on their patient care skills. The resident board of Lurie Terrace expressed how excited they were to invite the college to host this event and that they would like to have them back for similar events in the future. The COP also hosts a medication reconcilliation at Lurie Terrace which allows the residents to ask questions about their medications and create a medication schedule with PharmD students. The College of Pharmacy will be returning to Lurie Terrace on April 6th, to offer safe medication disposal services to those who will not be able to make the trip to the event at Rackham Graduate Center.
