Dr. Paul C. Walker Named 2022 Wendell T. Hill Award Recipient

December 5, 2022

The Association of Black Health System Pharmacists (ABHP) has honored Paul C. Walker, PharmD, FASHP, with the 2022 Wendell T. Hill Award. The award was presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear convention in Las Vegas, NV, on December 6.

Dr. Walker serves the University of Michigan as Assistant Dean for Experiential Education and Clinical Professor of Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy, and Manager of Pharmacy Patient Care Outcomes, Michigan Medicine.

According to ABHP, The Wendell T. Hill Award was established in 1997 to honor a pharmacist, with many of the qualities so brilliantly exemplified by Wendell T. Hill, who, through their dedication and commitment, has made significant contributions to the profession of pharmacy.

In 1971, Wendell Hill was the first Black pharmacist elected president of ASHP. He also served as Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Howard University and received the ASHP Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award – health-system pharmacy’s highest honor.

“I am so deeply honored to receive this award named for such a giant in health-system pharmacy – with so many national recognitions for his outstanding work and leadership in our profession,” says Dr. Walker. “I am humbled that the ABHP Foundation believes I exemplify the integrity, professional excellence, and leadership Dr. Hill portrayed and that my efforts to advance our profession, like his, are making a difference.”

Dr. Walker is the current president of the ASHP and recently completed a term on the ASHP Board of Directors where he served as chair of the ASHP Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. His other service commitments have included terms as chair of the ASHP Committee on Nominations, member of the ASHP Commission on Affiliate Relations and the ASHP Foundation Donor Retention Subcommittee, and as a delegate to the ASHP House of Delegates.

Dr. Walker received his BS in pharmacy and his PharmD from Wayne State University, in Detroit,  and completed residency in pharmacy practice at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Medical Center. He also completed a specialty residency in pediatric pharmacy practice at the University of Tennessee and Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, Memphis, TN.
