Bruce A. Mueller to be Recommended as College of Pharmacy Interim Dean

Bruce A. Mueller, professor and senior associate dean at the University of Michigan’s College of Pharmacy, will step in as interim dean of the college, effective July 1, subject to Board of Regents’ approval at the virtual June 25 meeting.

Mueller succeeds James Dalton, current dean of the College of Pharmacy, who in May was named executive vice president and provost at the University of Alabama, effective Aug. 1. Information on the search for a permanent dean will be forthcoming from the Provost’s Office.

“Professor Mueller is a distinguished scholar and educator with years of experience as a faculty member and an administrator,” said Susan Collins, interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “He has a long and distinguished record of service to the university and the pharmacy community.”

Mueller has 20 years of service at U-M, having joined the College of Pharmacy faculty as a professor and chair of the Department of Clinical, Social, and Administrative Sciences, and as the assistant director of the Department of Pharmacy Services in 2000. He served as the associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Pharmacy from 2011-2020 and in February 2020 became senior associate dean of the school.

“I am honored to be selected to lead the nation’s best college of pharmacy. Together with our renowned faculty and staff, we will build on the strong foundation established by Dean Dalton,” Mueller said. “Our priorities this year will be to fully reengage our research enterprise and to deliver an outstanding educational experience for all our students in the upcoming Fall semester.”

Mueller also has received numerous teaching awards, including U-M’s College of Pharmacy Teaching Excellence Award in 2011 and the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s Critical Care PRN Research Award, both in 2015.

Prior to joining U-M, he was an assistant and associate professor of clinical pharmacy at Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy. Concurrent with his appointments at Purdue, he served as an adjunct assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University. He also was a professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University with his practice site at the Indiana University Medical Center.

Mueller is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Nephrology, and the National Kidney Foundation.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1984 and PharmD degree from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1988. He is licensed to practice pharmacy in both Wisconsin and Michigan.
