Role Overview and Bio

Madison N. Irwin, PharmD, BCPS is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. She practices as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Palliative Care at University of Michigan Health. Her clinical practice and research interests center on improving the care of vulnerable populations, including older adults and palliative care populations, by advancing clinical pharmacy practice within interdisciplinary teams.

Dr. Irwin graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Dayton in 2015 and graduated with her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2019. She completed PGY-1 and PGY-2 residencies in Pharmacy Practice and Pain Management and Palliative Care, respectively, at University of Michigan Health. Following residency, Dr. Irwin completed a Clinical and Translational Sciences postdoctoral fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Michael Smith at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

Research Interests

  • Improving the care of individuals living with serious illness through the advancement of novel pharmacy practice in interdisciplinary palliative care teams

  • Appropriate use of opioids to provide safe and effective pain management

  • Increasing uptake of best practices when managing non-pain symptoms including insomnia

  • Pharmacogenetics of pain and symptom management
