Students Take Home Scholarships from National Pharmaceutical Association Annual Meeting
Two University of Michigan College of Pharmacy students were awarded scholarships at the National Pharmaceutical Association Annual Meeting at the SNPhA Awards Banquet in Orlando, Florida on July 26, 2015. David Dadiomov, PharmD'16, received a $1000 Student Pharmacist Excellence Scholarship sponsored by Walgreens. This award was established in 2008 to recognize students who demonstrate and advocate for patient care in their communities."My essay prompt was 'What personal impact have you made towards community healthcare outreach and awareness?' I mentioned numerous community outreach events SNPhA has led throughout the year, which included an initiative to improve asthma education in underserved communities," said Mr. Dadiomov. "Another focus was on a new health fair that I helped to put on this past year in collaboration with Wayne State University's SNPhA chapter, and a free clinic in Detroit. The application was accompanied by a strong letter of support from our faculty advisor, Dr. Paul Walker."
Allison Liao, PharmD'16, was the recipient of a $3000 Diversity Advancement Award, also sponsored by Walgreens. The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) Walgreens Diversity Advancement Award was established in 2013 to highlight the diversity achievements of members and Walgreens dedication to diversity. “I would like to thank Dr. Janice Stumpf for providing me with a faculty member letter of recommendation,” said Ms. Liao. “The essay question was, ‘how have you excelled in achieving the mission of diversity?' My answer highlighted my involvement in establishing U-M SNPhA's Cultural Diversity Night and inviting the Spectrum Center's My Voice Panel speakers to the College.”
Both students were required to write an essay which highlights their qualifications for the respective awards, obtain letters of recommendation from professors and employers, and have maintained an adequate grade point average.
