Pharmacy Deans’ Statement on Recent Events
June 1, 2020
Dear U-M Pharmacy family,
The recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the mistreatment of Sha’Teina Grady El by a Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy remind us all that we have far to go to achieve the society we need. Everyone regardless of color, faith, sexual orientation or the hundreds of other attributes that define our diverse community should be able to expect that they will be treated with dignity and respect by not only law officials, but also by their fellow citizens. Unfortunately these most recent examples show us that we do not live in such a world. Their lives matter. Say it in any way that speaks to your sense of the problems, but do know that the problems are real and that they affect members of our College of Pharmacy and U-M community in ways that many of us might never truly comprehend. I refer you to U-M Chief Diversity Officer Sellers’ recent statement for one very poignant view.
Our College is committed to supporting all of its faculty, staff and students and will continue to strive toward justice, equality and inclusion for all. We recognize that many of you have been personally impacted by these events. Know that we acknowledge the physical, mental and emotional toll you may be experiencing. These are not easy times and they are made more difficult with our not being able to physically be with each other and receive the support and care we so easily give each other during trying times. We urge you to take the steps for the self care you need, especially right now. CAPS is available for students, as are Deans Bostwick and Nelson, and the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office is available for faculty and staff.
Know that you are not alone. Know that we stand with you and will continue to work toward the societal changes needed for a future that supports and values lives and humanity of all.
Sincerely,
Jim Dalton
