Welcome Preceptors

Criteria for faculty appointment as a preceptor include:

• The ability to provide a high-quality learning experience that meets the learning objectives established by the College of Pharmacy
• Pharmacy licensure in good standing with a state board of pharmacy
• Approved as a preceptor by the state board of pharmacy (Required in Michigan. May not be applicable in all states)
• Completion and submission of all adjunct faculty appointment forms
• Completion of the required College of Pharmacy preceptor orientation program       

If you are interested in developing a pharmacy practice experience site for students from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, please contact the Office of Experiential Education via email at [email protected] and include the following information:

• Full name
• Pharmacist's License State and Number
• Site Name and Address
• Preferred email and telephone number for follow-up
• Statement (300 words or less) telling us why you want to take students at your site

Please note: An Affiliation Agreement between the College and the site is required prior to any student placement. Please see Affiliation Agreement Process Tab for more information.

The College of Pharmacy must maintain an Affiliation Agreement with all experiential education sites. The agreement is typically effective for 7 years and may be renewed after the agreement expires. The agreement sets forth the rights and responsibilities of the College and the site for providing educational experiences to the College’s pharmacy students. The agreement process can be approached two ways, as described below.

A. The College of Pharmacy initiates an Affiliation Agreement with a new site by sending the site the College of Pharmacy template. If the site agrees to start with the College’s template, the following steps occur:

• The site and their legal counsel review the College’s template. If any changes are requested, all proposed modifications must be outlined using the “Track Changes” function in Microsoft Word, and the agreement is returned to the College electronically. The “Track Changes” process will continue back and forth until the parties are comfortable with the modified agreement and it is ready for signatures.
• Once the agreement is in final form and ready for signatures, the Dean of the College of Pharmacy will sign, and the agreement will then be emailed to the site for the site’s signature(s). The agreement must be signed by someone at the site with the legal authority to do so.
• After the site has signed the agreement, it is emailed back to the College. The College then sends the agreement to the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) to obtain the signature for the Regents of the University. Once the signature for the Regents is obtained, the agreement is sent back to the College.
• The College will then email the site a fully executed copy of the agreement (an original can be provided to the site upon request).

B. If the site indicates that they need to use their own template, the process varies from site to site, but generally follows these steps:

• The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) reviews the template and forwards it to OGC for review. Any requested changes and/or questions from the OEE and OGC will be communicated to the site electronically using the “Track Changes” function in Microsoft Word. The “Track Changes” process will continue back and forth until the parties are comfortable with the modified agreement and it is ready for signatures.
• Once the agreementis in final form, signatures to the agreement will be obtained following the process outlined above. 

Adjunct Faculty: Preceptors are appointed as Adjunct Faculty of the College.

University of Michigan Library Resources: Adjunct Faculty can access the University's library system, which maintains extensive collections of electronic journals and newspapers, including the electronic resources of Taubman Health Sciences Library. 

Career Services:  The College of Pharmacy can assist you in filling open internship positions or permanent pharmacist jobs.  We are able to arrange on-campus interviews with students as well as post open positions on our electronic job board. 

Continuing Education: As a benefit to our preceptors, we provide access to CEImpact (CEI) Preceptor and Pharmacist Libraries.  This allows preceptors to gain free access to select online resources, practical tools, continuing education and group discussions designed to advance teaching skills and engage students.

In addition, the College of Pharmacy sponsors several live Continuing Education programs each year, with the opportunity of earning up to 10 hours of credit at no cost to you. These programs include the Tom D. Rowe Annual Pharmacy Lectures and the Preceptor Education and Recognition Symposium.

Preceptor Recognition: Each year we recognize one outstanding preceptor as Preceptor of the Year, which is an honor bestowed upon an exceptional College of Pharmacy preceptor. Preceptors are nominated by students or colleagues, then one individual is selected for this award by a committee of their peers. We also acknowledge preceptors who have shown dedication to our program by recognizing preceptors who have reached a milestone in years of service in 5-year increments.

University of Michigan Golf Course: Adjunct clinical faculty members pay faculty/staff rates upon presentation of their Mcard. Additional information is available on their website.

Complimentary or discounted admission to select home athletic events: By showing your Mcard, you can gain free or discounted admission to select home athletic events including women’s basketball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, softball, baseball, swimming and diving, tennis, soccer, field hockey, and track & field events. Please note that this does not include men’s football, basketball, or hockey. 

Department of Recreational Sports Membership: Adjunct clinical faculty members are eligible for membership to the Department of Recreational Sports facilities and programs. Additional information is available on their website.
