BSPS Requirements

Take classes in the foundations of pharmacy such as the sciences of medicines, biopharmaceutics and biology, as well as core courses in chemistry and mathematics. You must complete the following courses to achieve your BSPS degree.

Electives

Students are required to take 27 credits choosing from a variety of course topics such as: Science of Medicines, Contemporary Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical and Research Ethics and Drug Discovery and Development.

Students are required to take 18 credits including a first year writing course, humanities or foreign language courses and courses in the social sciences. 

Students are required to take 49 credits in the math and sciences choosing from a variety of course topics such as: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Statistics.

Students must also take approximately 26 credits of elective courses to satisfy the 120 credits needed to graduate. Many students opt to dual-major or add a minor to satisfy this requirement.

Research Focus

Students pursuing the BSPS research track are encouraged to apply for open research positions with members of our faculty. Students who secure a research assistantship with faculty will work with a College of Pharmacy support staff member to ensure they are receiving credit toward their degree for this work.

Campus-Wide Research Opportunities

Students may also take advantage of research opportunities throughout the university, including the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts’ Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and co-sponsored research opportunities with other schools and colleges at Michigan.

Honors Thesis Project

During senior year, BSPS students have the opportunity to graduate with honors with an Honors Thesis Research Project.
To qualify for the Honors Thesis Research Project, students must:
  • Hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 
  • Submit a research proposal 
  • Register for academic credit
  • Present a poster at the College’s annual research forum
  • Complete a thesis paper
