  • Sample Submission

The NMR Core routinely runs quantitative untargeted metabolomics on whole blood, serum, plasma, urine, cell media. Please feel free to contact Larisa Yeomans [email protected] or Kathleen Stringer [email protected] with questions about your samples and study planning, and when possible, prior to your sample collection.  NMR metabolomics is a powerful platform but not very sensitive, hence ideally we need a minimum volume of 500-600uL of biofluid and when possible one or two technical replicates.

  • Sample process

After a conversation on the feasibility of running your samples by NMR, we will send you a quote. Upon your acceptance and provision of a short code, you may submit your samples (please bring them in dry ice), and update their information in our freezers using the university freezer inventory 'Freezerworks'. We will process your samples according to our standard operating procedures (SOP) used for your biofluid (precipitation/extraction/lyophilization/filtration) and an internal standard of a known concentration (DSS-d6 or Formate) will be added.  Metabolomics samples are run on the 500MHz NMR instrument in our Core.

  • Results

After spectral acquisition, the NMR spectra is processed and profiled using commercially available Chenomx software which contains a library of hundreds of metabolites and each detectable metabolite is profiled to yield a metabolite concentration.  At the end you will have a list of metabolites (30-50 metabolites depending on the biofluid) and their concentration in uM units.

  • Fees

University of Michigan investigators:  $200 per sample
