Dr. Everett N. Hiestand, a pioneer in pharmaceutical powder compaction science and technology, passed away on May 13, 2018 at the age of 97. He received his AB in Chemistry from Bluffton University (Bluffton, Ohio) and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from The Ohio State University. His graduate education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the United States Navy. Dr. Hiestand began his career as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at South Dakota State College, and returned to Ohio two years later to work as a Research Scientist at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. He accepted a position as a Senior Scientist at the Upjohn Company in 1955 and worked there until his retirement in 1990, receiving the W. E. Upjohn Award for Meritorious Service in 1963. Dr. Hiestand concurrently served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan's College of Pharmacy from 1968 - 1992.

He was named a Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1973), a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (1986), and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1980). Dr. Hiestand was awarded the American Pharmaceutical Association's Ebert Prize in 1978 and their Industrial Pharmaceutical Technology Award in 1982. He specialized in the physics of pharmaceutical tablet production and the characterization of pharmaceutical materials, which led to his development of the Hiestand Tableting Indices. Through the years, Dr. Hiestand gave many presentations and academic courses in the United States and also in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He remained active as a consultant for many years following his retirement. Dr. Hiestand had a strong interest in education, serving for ten years on the Board of Education of the Gull Lake Community Schools. He was passionate about environmental issues, devoting his early years of retirement to the Kalamazoo (Michigan) County Environmental Concerns Committee and Kalamazoo County Environmental Health Advisory Council.

Dr. Hiestand is survived by his wife Marge, his son Nelson (Jennifer) Hiestand, his daughter Carolyn Hiestand, one grandson, Andrew (Samantha) Hiestand, and several nieces and nephews. He was laid to rest at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
