U-M Pharmacy Professor Jasmine Luzum Named Rising Star
Jasmine Luzum (formerly Talameh), PharmD, PhD, BCPS, assistant professor of clinical pharmacy, was named a Rising Star by her alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. The award, which recognizes alumni of the university who are making great achievements while still early in their careers, was presented to Dr. Luzum at the Rxtravaganza Gala on November 2, 2019. Dr. Luzum graduated with her PharmD summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2008.
Dr. Luzum's acceptance speech focused on the importance of mentoring PharmD students. She emphasized, "this award recognizes not only the faculty at Pitt Pharmacy, but also all of you alumni... I urge you to keep serving as mentors... because you never know when even a small gesture could create the next Rising Star."
Dr. Luzum attributes the start of her path towards a research career to the research experiences and mentorship that she received during her education. She hopes to pay it forward and help her current students at the U-M College of Pharmacy find the careers that they love as well. Dr. Luzum currently mentors four PharmD Investigations (PDI) students and two PhD students. She is also the faculty mentor of a "Pharmacy Phamily" at the College – a supportive group consisting of a student from each year of the PharmD program and a faculty member.
Dr. Luzum runs a clinical and translational research lab at the U-M College of Pharmacy, with the overall goal of improving cardiovascular medication outcomes using precision medicine. Dr. Luzum joined the Department of Clinical Pharmacy in the College in July 2016. She received her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2013. Dr. Luzum completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Center for Pharmacogenomics in 2016. She became a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and an Applied Pharmacologist by the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology in 2015.
