Many widely used medicines are derived from the natural environment. Dr. David Sherman collects marine and terrestrial microorganisms from around the world and tests the chemical compounds they produce for potential disease-fighting capability. His lab has discovered new drug candidates like an antibiotic that is active against MRSA and other drug-resistant bacteria, drugs with potential for treating various cancers, and medicines to fight infectious diseases.

Dr. David Sherman is a research professor in the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) and the Hans W. Vahlteich Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, as well as and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education at the U-M College of Pharmacy.
