What to Expect in the Application?

A ten-week summer research program designed to provide undergraduate students with research experience in biochemistry, biophysics, cheminformatics, computational chemistry, enzymology, marine biology, molecular biology and plant biology to prepare you for graduate school.

  • Perform real-life research in a lab with world-renowned faculty in chemistry, biology, biophysics and more.
  • Participate in workshops preparing you for graduate school.
  • Present your research and findings at a research symposium.

Focus on your research, and we will cover meals, housing and provide a $7,000 stipend.

Program Dates: May 21 – August 1, 2025
Application Deadline: February 20, 2025

To participate, you must meet the following criteria:

  • In accordance with NSF guidelines, applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.
  • Applications should have a strong interest in pursuing a graduate degree (MS or PhD) in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) discipline and not a professional degree (PharmD, MD, DDS, etc.).
  • Applicants who are planning to receive a Bachelor’s degree before the end of the program are not eligible.
  • Participants are not allowed to take courses or work during the program.
  • Participants must be available to begin the program on the start date.
  • Participants must attend an institution that is not the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Our application process is simple, but we want to give you a preview of what we ask for.

Previous Research and Laboratory Experiences
We will ask that you list your previous experiences in a research and/or laboratory setting and include the date, location and your duties.

Extracurricular Activities
We will ask you to list any extracurricular activities you have been involved in (sports, hobbies, etc).

Personal Statement
We will ask you to write one page describing your educational and career goals and how participating in this program will assist you in accomplishing those goals.

Letters of Reccomendation
We will ask you to provide the name and contract information for two references to provide a letter of recommendation.

These letters can come from:

  • Faculty Instructors
  • Research Advisors
  • Academic Advisors
  • Employers

The application will generate an email that will be sent directly to these two individuals to submit their letters.

Transcripts
We will ask you to electronically submit a transcript (unofficial or official accepted).

REU Faculty Mentor Interest
You will be asked to choose five REU Faculty Mentors whose research most interests you. We will do our best to honor your preference. You can view a list of mentors here soon.
