Nearly all students accepted for graduate study at the College receive
substantial financial aid and health insurance. However, during their
first year at the College, financial aid is not usually given to international
students who have no previous U.S. schooling. After one year, international
students may receive financial aid if they are doing well academically,
and if funds are available.
Financial aid is provided in the following ways:
Graduate Student Instructors
Graduate Student Instructors (GSI) serve 15-16 hours per week in undergraduate
laboratories and/or courses under the direction of faculty members. GSI
positions are typically granted for one term each academic year. They
include stipends, full tuition grants, and health insurance. GSI usually
receive additional financial support during the remaining months.
Endowed and Special Fellowships
Several fellowships consisting of a stipend and a tuition scholarship
are provided to support full-time graduate study and research at the College.

listing.
Graduate Student Research Assistantships
Twelve-month research assistantship appointments, consisting of a
full-tuition subsidy, are funded annually by the National Institutes of
Health, other divisions of the federal government, and the pharmaceutical
industry. These assistantships include stipends, full-tuition grants,
and health insurance. To qualify for financial support, graduate students
must be enrolled for two terms a year and be on campus 12 months of the
year.
Rackham Merit Award (for Under-Represented Minority Students)
A competitive award consisting of tuition payments and monthly stipends
for two terms is available to newly admitted minority students in approved
doctoral programs in the divisions of biological/health sciences and the
physical/engineering sciences.
Stipends
The stipend rate for all types of support - teaching assistantships,
research assistantships, and fellowships is $21,000 or $23,500, depending
upon the program of study (2005-2006 academic year). Health insurance
is also covered.
Loans
Loans are available to students through the University's Office
of Financial Aid. The College of Pharmacy has two special funds from
which loans can be requested: the Harry Helfman Pharmacy Student Aid Fund,
and the Albert B. Prescott Memorial Loan Fund. In addition, the Horace
H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies offers financial support in
the form of discretionary funds, travel grants, and fellowships.
