The advanced practice experiences comprise the entire fourth (P4) year of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. Students are required to complete eight 4-week clerkships, in the following categories:
- One community pharmacy practice clerkship.
- One institutional pharmacy practice clerkship.
- One ambulatory care clerkship.
- Two inpatient care clerkships.
- One additional ambulatory or inpatient care clerkship.
- One drug information clerkship.
- One indirect patient care clerkship.
Many students also select a ninth clerkship to fulfill fourth-year elective requirements. Each 4-week rotation carries an individual course number (required clerkships are designated Pharmacy 687-694; the elective clerkship is Pharmacy 685) and is counted as a 3-credit course.
All clerkships begin on a Monday and end on a Friday, and require a full-time commitment. The current advanced practice experiences calendar is shown below.
Upon satisfactory completion of the clerkships, students have met the
Michigan Board of Pharmacy internship requirements for licensure as a
pharmacist.
